You’d care as much as I do right now if you were editing a book about a zoo.

One source I’ve found suggests zero plurals are also used when animals are viewed as prey (we shot two buffalo). But this seems speculative.

There are a dozen or so established cases where animal names have a ‘zero plural’ (eg sheep, deer) – but there seems to be no general rule.
